TROOP 14
New Scout Information

Welcome new scouts and their families.

What will you learn from scouting?
You will learn many new skills. You will have FUN doing things you've never done before and going places you have never been. Most of all, you will learn to be a leader. All of the boys in the Troop have an opportunity to hold leadership positions. You will find that the things you learn in Scouting help you throughout life.

Meetings:
Troop 14 meets weekly on Monday nights from 7:00 - 8:30 at the Versailles United Methodist Church.

Outings:
In addition to the regular weekly meetings, we try to have at least one additional activity per month. These include campouts, backpacking, rock climbing and bike hikes. Summer camp is an important outing for our troop and we encourage all boys to attend. The Bluegrass Council operates a summer camp at Camp McKee.  Summer Camp, which is for a week, costs about $125-150. There are district-wide campouts that we attend every year at Scout World in the Kentucky Horse Park and the Spring & Fall Camporee.

Advancement:
Our troop leaders and scouts help new scouts advance through the ranks. We encourage each new boy to obtain the First Class Scout rank by the end of their first year.  Troop guides along with our assistant scoutmasters are always working with new scouts to attain their desired advancement. Hopefully, you will attain the top rank of Eagle Scout (you have until your 18th birthday to accomplish this).

Adult Involvement: Although our troop boys plan the weekly meetings and campouts, it takes considerable adult support to help carry the plans out smoothly. We encourage each scout's family to get involved.  We have many parents who are currently involved in a variety of positions in the troop. But we always need more. Whether as an assistant scoutmaster (don't worry-there is plenty of training) or a committee member, parental involvement is always welcome and needed. We have found that the most successful scouts have parents who are involved. And it is fun for the parents too!

Yearly Registration: $17 for a year which covers registration, insurance and a subscription to Boy's Life Magazine.  Annual Troop Dues of $100 (payable quarterly) include a Troop Class B t-shirt, a troop cap (The t-shirt and cap are only given the first year), all rank and merit badges, and use of the troop equipment & supplies.

Uniforms: Our troop has a class A and class B uniform. Class B uniforms are worn on many outings. We will have a troop uniform exchange program setup in the near future.

Class A: Beige/tan Boy Scout shirt is worn to all Monday meetings. In addition, Boy Scout pants or shorts and neckerchief are to be worn at court-of-honors and district functions such as Summer Camp, Camporee and scout functions.  Optional: belt and hat.  All new Scouts are required to have their uniform before they can advance to the next rank.

Class B: Troop T-Shirt

Equipment: A Boy Scout handbook is required (cost about $8.00.) Sleeping bag, insulated pad, mess kit, backpack and flashlight are optional, but recommended for outings.
Scoutmaster Conference will be conducted monthly, Board of Review is conducted twice per quarter, and Court of Honor will be conducted quarterly.

All scouts are required to fill the Versailles UMC Health form for insurance purposes.
